CORTLAND, NY (607NewsNow) — There’s a new scam warning in Cortland.
Police say phony invoices for permits requesting payment to the city have been circulating. “These invoices are not legitimate. Individuals receiving these fraudulent invoices may be instructed to wire money or submit payment using information provided in the invoice,” police said.
The Cortland Police Department stresses you should never wire money based on unexpected bills.

“If you receive an invoice claiming to be from the City of Cortland Code Enforcement Office, please contact the office directly using a known, verified phone number to confirm that the invoice is legitimate before making any payment,” authorities added.
