NORWICH, N.Y. (WHCU) – A Cortland County man is behind bars after leading authorities on a chase.

Norwich Police received a call at approximately 1 p.m. on Saturday about a man allegedly stealing from cars in the Norwich High School parking lot. That man was identified as 28-year-old Matthew Maricle, of Cincinnatus, who was pursued by law enforcement for 30 miles into Otsego County before ultimately crashing his car into a ditch in the town of Mount Upton.

Reports say Maricle was driving a car that he hijacked from an 81-year-old man in the City of Cortland that morning, and that Maricle was released from jail just three days prior. Maricle is charged with reckless endangerment, unlawful fleeing of a police officer, resisting arrest, and criminal possession of stolen property.
