ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) — A Tompkins County corrections officer is accused of assaulting an inmate.

Sheriff Derek Osborne says Mark Vanderhoof struck the inmate in the back of the head and face with an open hand Friday afternoon, which Osborne adds was unjustified.

Vanderhoof, who was a lateral transfer to the Sheriff’s office working as a probationary CO, was charged Monday with official misconduct and harassment. Osborne says Vanderhoof was fired following an investigation.
