HORSEHEADS, NY (607NewsNow) – A fatal crash is under investigation in Chemung County.

On December 22, State Police were called to Route 13 in Horseheads just after 2 p.m. for reports of an ‘erratic vehicle’ traveling south.

Before troopers located the vehicle, they were redirected to a reported crash on Route 13. When they arrived, they located a Subaru Forester fully engulfed in flames. The initial attempt to extinguish the fire was unsuccessful due to its intensity. Horseheads Town and County Fire Department responded and put the flames out. A deceased individual was located in the driver’s seat.

Investigators say it appears the driver was southbound on Route 13 when they left the roadway, struck a cattle fence, and continued for roughly 100 yards in a field before striking a tree. The Chemung County Medical Examiner has ordered an autopsy to determine the cause of death and confirm the identity of the victim.

The investigation is ongoing.
