SOUTHPORT, NY (607NewsNow) – Another homeless encampment ban could be coming to Chemung County.
WENY-TV reports Southport officials are considering criminalizing camping within the town limits. It comes after a similar ban recently enacted by Elmira City officials in November.
In Elmira, violators face $350-$500 fines and up to 90 days in jail for the first offense. Repeat offenders face as much as a $1000 fine and up to a year behind bars. The Southport Town Board is reviewing the proposal’s language and hopes to set a public hearing date in January, with a vote on the measure expected in February.
