SYRACUSE, NY (607NewsNow) — After Democrats in the Onondaga County Legislature secured a majority for the first time in 50 years in 2025, they now have a supermajority for the first time ever.
At this time last year, Republicans held a 12-5 majority in the Onondaga County Legislature. After winning a 10-seat majority in 2025, Democrats are now holding their first ever supermajority.
“Tonight we have been given a clear mandate to continue delivering for the residents of Onondaga County. After a year of governing, we hit the campaign trail and engaged thousands of constituents about their concerns and hopes for the county. We honored the will of voters this year, and I’m excited that they are sending us back to continue to be their voice,” said Onondaga County Legislature Chairwoman Nicole Watts.
The Democrats ran a campaign called The Onondaga County Slate of 17 Campaign in partnership with the New York Democrats Coordinated Campaign and Congressman John Mannion.
“The community has sent us back to continue our work. We’re ready to passionately make Onondaga County the place where people want to live and where everyone is able to thrive,” said Watts.
