ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) — Some demands are coming from a union at Cornell University.

The university’s chapter of American Association of University Professors (AAUP) is calling for the resignation of leadership, including President Michael Kotlikoff. In a statement, the union says administrators that include VP Ryan Lombardi mishandled issues like campus assault.

“We believe that Pres. Kotlikoff and VP Lombardi have demonstrated failure in their attention to equitable student well-being and accountability concerns, which is the top responsibility of top leaders. We also believe that for the Cornell community to take steps toward restoring good faith and democratic buy-in for shaping positive reforms, there needs to be a leadership change to show that Cornell is serious about admitting failure, executive responsibility, and rebuilding trust.”

Union representatives have also made two other demands: devote “large-scale financial and organizational resources to rebuild and expand infrastructures at multiple levels for prevention, supportive measures, and culture change related to sexual violence, with substantial resources and support for student-led initiatives” and permanently banning the Chi Phi fraternity.

“We call for the immediate and permanent banning of Chi Phi and for the immediate suspension of all IFC-sponsored fraternities, not merely IFC parties, pending a comprehensive process of systemic review led by the Student Assembly and Faculty Senate, which must consider all possible outcomes, including a full ban on IFC organizations,” the union said.

Kotlikoff announced the suspension of fraternity house parties on Oct. 13 for the remainder of Cornell’s academic year.

During a 2024 party at the Chi Phi house, a student known only as Jane Doe says she was drugged and raped by 7 frat brothers. She filed a civil lawsuit in September, which triggered the case to re-open. It’s now being handled by Attorney General Letitia James.
