ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) – Health officials in Tompkins County are seeking information related to a pair of dog bites.

Tompkins County Whole Health’s Environmental Health team is trying to locate two dogs involved in separate incidents that occurred on March 22, 2023. They’re trying to determine the vaccination status of the animals. If they are healthy, they can rule out post-rabies exposure treatments for the people who were bitten.

The first incident occurred around 4:00 p.m. near the intersection of Esty and Plain Streets in downtown Ithaca. A person was bit trying to secure a loose dog. The dog, described as small, tan, and short-haired, had blood on its legs and appeared injured. Officials say it could have been an Italian greyhound. Its owner appeared not long after the bite and reclaimed the dog.

The second incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. in Thompson Park near North Cayuga Street. A person was riding their bike and was bitten by a white poodle or poodle mix. The dog was being walked by two adults and a child. The adults were described as having long brown hair, with one wearing glasses.

Anyone with information regarding these dogs is asked to call Tompkins County Environmental Health at (607) 274-6688.
