SYRACUSE, NY (CortacaToday) — Gun violence in Syracuse has dropped.
Between January and July of this year, Governor Kathy Hochul says the Salt City saw a 32-percent decline in shootings over the same stretch of seven months last year.
“Keeping New Yorkers safe is my top priority,” Governor Hochul said. “Our comprehensive efforts to bring down gun violence are working – and I’ll never stop fighting to ensure safe communities all across our state.”
In a statement to WHCU, Syracuse Police Chief Joe Cecile said, “The Officers and Detectives of the Syracuse Police Department work tirelessly every day to bring the city’s gun violence numbers down, because we know a reduction in this category means fewer families standing around either a hospital bed or a coffin. I both applaud and thank Governor Hochul for continuing to invest in these efforts toward reducing gun violence.”
Across New York, Hochul notes gun violence fell 29 percent in the first seven months of 2024.
