ELMIRA, N.Y. (WHCU) – The Chemung County Sheriff’s Office has recovered dozens of guns in a burglary investigation.
Deputies responded to a residence in the Town of Veteran on March 9, 2023, after a neighbor reported a suspicious car. Authorities say they believe the presence of the neighbor caused one of the suspects to leave evidence behind that would lead to his identification. They’ve made two arrests in the investigation. Shawn Mitstifer, of Veteran, and Kyle Menio, of Van Etten are facing burglary charges. More arrests are expected.
The Sheriff’s Office says they’ve found all the missing handguns as well as a large number of shotguns and rifles and other valuables that were taken, including coins and jewelry. Several long guns are still unaccounted for. The investigation is ongoing.
