LANSING, NY (607NewsNow) — A September 29th Facebook post from No Data Center FLX has announced that the Lansing Town Board is drafting a ban of data centers.

After a Town Board meeting on Tuesday, September 29th, where 36 out of 38 speakers who took the floor were against the proposed data center, the board has started to draft a data center ban.

In May 2026, a Tompkins County Supreme Court Judge affirmed the right to challenge the Lansing Zoning Board of Appeals’ (ZBA) classification of a proposed data center as a permissible land use. In June 2026, a coalition of groups held a press conference before a Lansing Town Board meeting, emphasizing community opposition to TeraWulf’s proposed Cayuga Data campus project.

Tompkins County Legislator Mike Sigler, who primarily represents Lansing, said the following in a Facebook post regarding the board’s decision:

“Almost a year after Terawulf, a data center builder and operater, first submitted plans to convert the shuttered coal fired power plant in Lansing into a data center, the town of Lansing board directed its attorney to write a resolution to ban data centers Tuesday night. It looks like the the town anticipates a lawsuit with this action, setting aside half a million dollars in next year’s budget for legal costs.”
