ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) – Ithaca’s Common Council has a new candidate in the 2nd Ward.
Former chair of the city’s Public Safety and Information Commission, Aryeal Jackson, will run in the democratic primary to represent the area encompassing Ithaca High School, Fall Creek, and parts of downtown. Jackson said she’s running, in part, because, as a mother and business owner, she cares about the lived experiences of people in the city.
“When we enact people-informed policy the result is a better quality of life for everyone,” said Jackson in a statement. “My coalition is broad, but my foundational positions are consistent; progress, solutions, equity, and anti-racism.”
Jackson, who lives in Fall Creek with her partner and school-aged sons, has worked as a project manager, communications strategist and journalist in print and local public radio.
“As an Alderperson for the new 2nd Ward I will insist on a living wage for all workers,” said Jackson. “I’m prepared to help create policies that address housing issues impacting everyone from rents to seniors while standing firm with the black and brown communities displaced by gentrification and bias. We need action and implementation of Ithaca’s Green New Deal and Reimagining Public Safety. With my experience and bold approach, the 2nd Ward will have a strong voice.”
