HOMER, NY (CortacaToday) – A Cortland County youth has been recognized for her activism.

Recent Homer High School grad Olivia Hamilton is named the first annual Reality Check Cortland County Youth Ambassador of the Year.  The 17-year-old is recognized for 6 years of work raising awareness about the tobacco industry and its marketing tactics with Tobacco Free Zone Reality Check of Cortland, Tompkins, and Chenango Counties.

“I’m excited to receive this award,” said Hamilton. “Reality Check has given me the opportunity to raise awareness and take meaningful action against an industry that deceives people into using their deadly, addictive products. Being part of a large group of teens, all trying to reach the same goal, has been an amazing experience.”

Reality Check says Hamilton has attained many accomplishments in her role, including testifying at local municipal meetings about marketing, access, and exposure to smoke and vapor in public spaces. State Senator Lea Webb will present Hamilton with the award at the Homer Village Green on Thursday night before the start of the summer movie series.

“As a member of the Senate’s Health Committee, I believe it is vital to support programs like Reality Check that bring awareness about the tobacco industry’s tactics, which often target youth and other marginalized communities,” said State Senator Webb. “I am proud to recognize Olivia Hamilton for her continued efforts in educating and empowering her peers through this program. It is important that we have initiatives like this to inform the community and future generations about making important health decisions.”
