CORTLANDVILLE, NY (607NewsNow) – A phone scam is making the rounds in Cortland County.

According to Sheriff Mark Helms, the caller claims to be a “Senior Deputy Investigator” who advises the victim that they’ve missed federal court proceedings and asks for personal information.

The Sheriff’s Office has received multiple reports of these kinds of calls.

Helms adds you should never give out personal information over the phone and never agree to settle debts with a gift card.
