OWEGO, NY (607NewsNow) — The Owego Police Department is pursuing funding for public safety.

The department has applied for a $125,000 grant. If awarded, the money may be used to upgrade computers, drones, and license plate readers.

Village of Owego Trustee Fran VanHousen said the drones could be used by local firefighters and emergency medical services.

“I’m sure we could even cooperate with some of the smaller municipalities,” VanHousen said.

Other Owego lawmakers, such as Trustee Rusty Fuller, expressed caution about the tech upgrades. Fuller said computers are “completely hackable,” though he ultimately supported the grant application.

A timeline for when the department will hear back about the grant is unclear.
