LANSING, N.Y. (WHCU) — Leaders in Lansing want to honor a former slave.
On Wednesday, the Town Board voted to support naming the State Route 34B bridge after Peter Wheeler, who escaped slavery in the area around 1800. The resolution passed in a 3-1 vote. Board member Judy Drake voted against it.
“It wasn’t because I had a problem with the name, it was really process and the fact that I had no involvement, no part of that,” she says. “The naming of it is fine, I just still don’t feel that we have any role or part in naming that bridge.”
The town will mail the resolution to Governor Kathy Hochul, State Senator Lea Webb, and Assemblymember Anna Kelles.
