ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) — In 2023, Tompkins County launched a rapid response EMS program.
It addressed coverage gaps and lowered response times in rural parts of the county. The program, which started as a grant-funded pilot, is now covered by Tompkins County’s budget. About $500,000 was set aside for 2026.
Legislative Chair Shawna Black tells 607 News Now establishing a countywide EMS program is a long-term priority–but unlikely to become a reality in 2027.
“That’s something that probably won’t happen in this year’s budget,” Black added. “We know by 2030 countywide services are what other counties throughout New York State are moving to.”
