CORTLAND, N.Y. (WHCU) – A man has been convicted of sex crimes in Cortland County.
Lamar Joseph, 24, was found guilty of first-degree rape, 3rd-degree rape, first-degree sexual abuse, 3rd-degree sexual abuse, sexual misconduct, and forcible touching in Cortland County Court on Wednesday.
In June of 2022, Joseph matched with the victim on a social media dating app and arranged a meet-up with her at his residence where the crimes occurred. Prosecutors say sound police work and witness testimony led to the verdict.
“These cases are often the most challenging any D.A.’s Office faces due to late disclosures, lack of forensics, or the reluctance of victims to testify,” said Chief Assistant District Attorney (CADA) and Chief Special Victims Prosecutor Jessica Weyant. “This prosecution was successful because the victim reported the crime early, forensic evidence was preserved, and the victim was courageous in coming forward to testify.”
CADA Weyant requested that Joseph’s prior bail status be revoked and that he be held until his March 26 sentencing. Cortland County Court Judge David Alexander granted that request and remanded Joseph to Cortland County Jail.
Joseph’s legal team has until March 11 to file post-conviction motions.
“Unfortunately, nothing can undo the harm to the victim,” said District Attorney Patrick Perfetti. “We are hopeful that this resolution can commence healing and bring about closure for the victim and her family.”
