NEWFIELD, N.Y. (WHCU) -A Tioga County man faces multiple charges after leading police on a chase through four counties.
State Police initiated a traffic stop on a 2011 Honda Fit for a moving violation just before 3 p.m. on Saturday in the Town of Erin, Chemung County. Troopers say the car sped off, leading them on a pursuit through Chemung, Schuyler, Tioga, and Tompkins Counties, before ultimately pulling over on Vankirk Road in the Town of Newfield.
The driver, 25-year-old Austin Elia, of Willseyville, “immediately” exited the vehicle and was taken into custody.
Elia was allegedly found with a loaded AK-47, two 16-round high-capacity magazines, and about 7.5 grams of methamphetamine with packaging material.

Elia is charged with felony criminal possession of a controlled substance, three counts of felony criminal possession of a weapon for the gun and magazines, misdemeanor unlawful fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, misdemeanor aggravated unlicensed operator, and traffic infractions.
Elia was arraigned in the Town of Van Etten Court and is being held in Chemung County Jail on $200,000 cash bail. The Chemung and Schuyler County Sheriff’s Offices assisted NYSP in the pursuit. Two juvenile males, ages 12 and 14, were passengers inside Elia’s vehicle during the pursuit.
