ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) – A heating system problem at Wegmans has been resolved.

The Ithaca Fire Department (IFD) was dispatched to the grocery store around 6:45 a.m. on Monday for a report of an activated carbon monoxide alarm. IFD Lieutenant Jim Wheal said they found an elevated level of the gas inside, but it did not pose an immediate health threat.

“At no point did we find levels that were immediately dangerous to life or health, but they did indicate there was a significant problem,” said Wheal.

IFD worked with NYSEG and Wegmans staff to isolate the problem to a heating unit on the roof. It was promptly shut down and the situation began to improve immediately. Wheal stressed that the gas levels indicated a problem, but they did not pose an immediate risk to anyone in the store at the time of the alarm.

“Wegmans staff responded appropriately and were a huge help to IFD’s operation as we worked to determine the problem,” added Wheal.

With no hazard present, the Ithaca Fire Department left the scene around 8:30 a.m. in the hands of NYSEG and Wegmans staff. The store closed to the public during the investigation as a precaution.
