ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) — A write-in candidate for Ithaca Common Council has won.

The Ithaca Voice reports Patrick Kuehl is the winner of a seat in the Fourth Ward, unseating Alderperson Jorge DeFendini. It’s based on new numbers from the Tompkins County Board of Elections.

Although the count isn’t finished, reports say there are not enough votes for DeFendini to win. Kuehl, a Cornell senior, mounted a surprise write-in campaign for the four-year seat.

Another Cornell student is joining the Common Council. In the Fifth Ward, sophomore Clyde Lederman edged out independent candidate Jason Houghton.

In January, Ithaca’s Common Council will have three Cornell students: Alderperson Tiffany Kumar, who ran unopposed, Cornell’s student assembly president Patrick Kuehl, and Lederman.
