ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) — Jaywalking is currently a crime in Ithaca, but a Common Council member wants to go in a different direction.

The Ithaca Voice reports Alderperson Ducson Nguyen introduced possible decriminalization of the law Wednesday at a meeting of the Planning and Economic Development committee. Nguyen says drivers don’t always obey a state law – yielding to pedestrians in a crosswalk – which is putting people at risk.

The committee will get legal advice before moving forward.
