ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – A welfare check leads to a criminal charge for an Ithaca woman.

On July 3, around 8:20 a.m., Ithaca Police were called to the intersection of Pearsall Place and Hawthorne Place for a report of a woman sleeping near the sidewalk.

The woman became combative when awoken, and she demanded a weapon from one of the responding officers. According to IPD, she then “forcefully and aggressively fought to remove the officer’s duty weapon from its holster.” The officer used force to prevent the weapon from being taken, and the woman was taken into custody.

The unnamed suspect, 28, was transported to a hospital for a mental health assessment.

She faces attempted criminal possession of a weapon, a felony.
