CORTLAND, NY (607NewsNow) – Cortland has a new official newspaper.

On the heels of the sudden closure of the Cortland Standard last week, the Cortland County Legislature met to designate an official publication.  Required by Section 214 of Cortland County law, lawmakers must designate an official newspaper, and they chose the Syracuse Post-Standard for the period running March 13, 2025, through December 31, 2025.

The Cortland Standard printed its last issue on Thursday after 157 years in business. The community staple published its first issue in 1867 and has been owned by the Clark family since 1876.

A note on the company website explained why it filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy, citing declining readership and increased costs, including a 25% tariff on newsprint. All 17 employees were laid off.
