ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – A Cornell graduate will be depicted on U.S. currency.

Vera Rubin will be featured in the 2025 American Women Quarters Program. The class of 1951 astronomer will be joined on coins with fellow honorees Althea Gibson, Girl Scouts founder Juliette Gordon Low, disabilities activist Stacey Park Milbern, and suffragist and journalist Ida B. Wells.

According to the university, Rubin is best known for obtaining scientific evidence to prove the existence of dark matter. Rubin, who died in 2016, changed scientific conceptions of the universe and sparked new research in astronomy and physics.

Big Red historian Corey Ryan Earle says Rubin will be the first Cornellian to be depicted on a circulating U.S. coin.
