ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) – Leaders in Tompkins County think it’s time to consider the possibility that migrants from the southern border could come to the area.
At Monday’s Budget, Capital, and Personnel Committee meeting the group briefly discussed immigration. Legislator Mike Lane spoke about Texas’ intent to send more busloads of immigrants to New York City, and how a relocation effort to Rockland County was not unanimously received well. Lane believes Tompkins County should start having conversations about the possibility that some people could be relocated here.
Legislator Rich John thinks Tompkins County is better prepared than most, due to its historical willingness to accept people fleeing political persecution and seeking better opportunities, as well as resources for families and non-English speaking people.
John adds that despite the county’s resources and experience, it’s a good idea to start brainstorming about operational plans and costs associated with an influx of people relocating to the area.
