ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) — Ithaca has not had a permanent police chief in two years. In April 2021, Dennis Nayor retired as chief. John Joly has served as the interim chief since then.

Mayor Laura Lewis says they’re still collecting opinions.

In addition to the chief search, Mayor Lewis says they’re also actively seeking new officers.

Early efforts to reimagine public safety included changing the name of IPD and turning officers into armed “public safety workers.”
