HORSEHEADS, NY (CortacaToday) – An investigation is underway after human remains were found in the Chemung River.

A pair of kayakers made the discovery in a wooded area along the river around 3 p.m. on Saturday, September 28, 2024. State Police in the Horseheads barracks say more information will be released as it becomes available. WENY-TV reports its potentially the third set of human remains found along the river in Chemung County since 2020.

In May 2022, a jawbone was found in the river just east of the Town of Chemung that was later proven to belong to 22-year-old Matthew Barber, who went missing in November 2020. The rest of his skeletal remains were never recovered.

In May 2020, remains that were later identified as James Burdick, of Corning, were found along the river between Elmira and Lowman. Burdick, who was 59 at the time, was reported missing in November of 2018.
