MARATHON, NY (607NewsNow) – Marathon will get a makeover.

On March 13, Governor Kathy Hochul announced that $4.5 million has been awarded to the village to revitalize its downtown area through the NY Forward grant program.

“At the heart of thriving communities is a vibrant downtown that brings families, friends, and visitors together, and supports local businesses,” said Hochul. “These are the kinds of investments we are making in Central New York and across the state. Not just revitalizing downtowns but also creating affordable housing opportunities and fostering the growth of local economies.”

Noting the village’s location off Interstate 81, state officials said potential projects will “build upon its idyllic setting on the banks of the Tioughnioga River to spur investment and growth in the community.”

“We are very excited to learn that we are the recipients of a New York Forward Grant,” said Marathon Mayor Scott Chamberlin. “These grants are so important to every community that receives one, but especially important to those areas that are economically challenged. We are grateful to Governor Hochul for her continued support of this important program. Use of these funds will enable our village to continue our efforts to connect our riverfront to our Main Street, address housing shortages, restore historical properties, and enhance and grow our retail sector.”

Additionally, Chamberlin said they’ll increase cultural opportunities for residents and visitors.

It’s the second area winner of the state’s revitalization investment program in 2025. The Village of Dryden was announced as a Southern Tier NY Forward winner late last month. It follows the Village of Groton’s win last year.
