ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) — Tompkins County legislators are affirming their support for deconstruction.
Lawmakers passed a resolution on June 17 that discourages the demolition of building materials.
“Part of this is to help affirm our commitment to reuse as much as possible, and elevate and raise awareness around New York State,” Legislator Anne Koreman said.
According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, debris from demolition and construction represents 46 percent of all waste generated in the state.
Koreman said municipalities like Auburn and Dryden have passed similar resolutions that support deconstruction.
The county is preparing to build a multimillion-dollar structure, dubbed the Center of Government, in downtown Ithaca. Part of that process will involve deconstructing buildings currently on the site.
