ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) — A major project in Tompkins County is moving forward.

On June 3, legislators voted 9-4 to reaffirm their commitment to the Center of Government. The project is expected to cost up to $50 million.

Legislator Greg Mezey said the burden will not fall entirely on taxpayers.

“There will be other resources, other grants, and other support that will go into making this happen,” he said.

Critics of the project, like Legislator Travis Brooks, said the total cost will likely exceed $50 million.

“I just can’t imagine what this price tag will actually look like,” he said.

The building will be on North Tioga Street in downtown Ithaca. Brooks said the availability of parking is a concern.

Downtown Ithaca was chosen as the site partly because of its central location in Tompkins County, though other options were considered.
