ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – Tompkins County is searching for a new historian.

On November 12, 0fficials announced the start of the formal search process. The appointment of a historian is required in every municipality by law in New York State.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the preservation of the lived history of the county, including supporting access to archives, working with municipal historians, and ensuring public records are accessible and accurate.

According to the Tompkins County Charter, the historian will periodically convene meetings of municipal historians and the history center, and will provide consultation and leadership on the following:

  • assembling and preserving historical documents and information
  • developing and presenting programs and research projects
  • identifying sites of historical significance
  • using maps and other tools to support historical understanding
  • researching cemetery locations and conditions
  • reviewing and advising on the deaccession of historic materials
  • addressing other topics deemed appropriate by the group
