ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – Dispatchers have been honored in Tompkins County.

On April 17, the Department of Emergency Response held its fourth annual awards ceremony to mark National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week. Among the night’s awardees were Eldon Stevens, who was recognized for 10 years of service, Chris Saxon, recognized for 20 years of service, and Pat Harris, Dispatcher of the Year.

For the first time, Team Citations were given out for outstanding collaborative work in 2024. Groups were highlighted for assistance during a June 8, 2024, power outage at the 911 Center, and the response, assistance, and coordination to a multi-acre brush fire last November in Lansing.

Tompkins County Department of Emergency Response (TCDoER) Assistant Director John Halaychik read a letter from the American Red Cross acknowledging and praising staff for helping control and mitigate the fire. The Red Cross called TCDoER’s actions that night an example of their mission to prevent and alleviate suffering in times of emergency.

“The importance of recognizing the devotion and commitment of these dedicated professionals is immeasurable,” added Halaychik.

A representative from the Office of State Senator Lea Webb also presented TCDoER with a proclamation honoring the work at the Emergency Communications Center and the role dispatchers play in public safety and service.
