APALACHIN, NY (607NewsNow) – A woman and her dog are dead after an attack in Tioga County.

On January 16, deputies were called to a residence in Apalachin for a report of a person down. Investigators say 51-year-old Darnelle Greeno sustained multiple dog bites throughout her body and was pronounced dead at the scene. The animal, which authorities confirm belonged to Greeno, then allegedly attacked a nearby bystander, who was “able to dispatch the dog.”

The Tioga County Sheriff’s Office adds the dog is deceased and there is no further public threat. The Tioga County Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the Criminal Investigation Division, the Town of Owego Dog Control, and the Tioga County Coroner’s Office.
