CORTLAND, NY (607NewsNow) — The SUNY Cortland football team will not repeat as national champions.

The Red Dragons fell to Springfield on Saturday in the NCAA Tournament. The final score was 40 to 28.

In a post-game press conference, Cortland Head Coach Curt Fitzpatrick said he’s proud of his players.

“This used to be how every season ended, and then these guys changed that last year,” he said. “That’s what makes it hurt so much now.”

Fitzpatrick said the loss matters on campus.

“Our administration, they do care if you win or lose,” he said. “That’s why I love coaching here, and that’s why I think our players love playing here because it means a lot.”

Saturday’s defeat ended Cortland’s 23-game win streak, which started in September of last year.
