CORTLAND, NY (CortacaToday) – Broadband connectivity is getting a major boost across the state.
Governor Kathy Hochul, and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer have announced $140 million in funding through the ConnectAll Municipal Infrastructure Grant Program will support over 1200 miles of expansion projects.
Among those projects is a $26 million investment in Central New York. The CNY Regional Planning and Development Board will establish CNYNET, which is a regional open-access fiber network that, with the help of Empire Access, will deliver service to 6,671 homes, businesses, and more in Cortland and Cayuga Counties. Poor coverage areas were identified by the Board during a 2021 Broadband Infrastructure Study.
The grants are primarily funded through the U.S. Department of the Treasury Capital Projects Fund via the American Rescue Plan Act, though Cortland and Cayuga Counties will contribute $3 million and $7 million, respectively.
