AUBURN, NY (607NewsNow) – An investigation is underway at Auburn Community Hospital.

On June 25, a contractor unearthed human skeletal remains around 3 p.m. on the hospital grounds.

Members of the Auburn Police Department, the Cayuga County Coroner, and the Cayuga County District Attorney’s Office responded to the scene. After examining an uncovered portion of the remains, the coroner “believed them to be human.”

Auburn PD and hospital administration developed a timeline suggesting the area being excavated had not been disturbed for at least 50 years. Authorities say it appears there’s only one set of skeletal remains.

A New York State Archaeologist and a State Police Forensic Investigative Unit were called in to exhume the remains. No specifics about the age, sex, or cause of death are currently known.

The Auburn Police Department will release more information as it becomes available.
