OVID, NY (607NewsNow) — Multiple crews are battling a blaze in Ovid.
Officials say several buildings are destroyed, including the Ovid Big M and Italian Kitchen. Part of Main Street is closed. Other road closures include portions of East Seneca Street and West Seneca Street. The Ovid Fire Department says firefighters will return to the scene this morning at 9 a.m.
FingerLakes1.com reports the fire was first reported shortly after 6:00 p.m. last night, and the Ovid Fire Department says firefighters remained on site overnight for a total of 11 hours. People living in apartments above the Big M were evacuated.
Because of the amount of water used to fire the fire, the Seneca County Health Department has issued a temporary water conservation order. Fire officials say people should stay away from downtown Ovid.
The South Seneca Central School District has canceled all classes today. “As Ovid begins the recovery process after last night’s devastating fire, there will be no school today for South Seneca,” the district posted on Facebook.
