CORTLAND, NY (607NewsNow) — A Cortland Common Council member is stepping down.

Alderperson Wayne Schutt has resigned his seat representing the city’s First Ward. In a statement released Tuesday, Schutt said the decision is in the ‘best interest of the community.’

“It has been an honor to serve the residents of Cortland’s 1st Ward. I am disappointed that I am unable to complete my term, but I believe stepping aside at this time is in the best interest of the community. I appreciate the opportunity to have served and thank those who supported me along the way.”

On Friday, Schutt was arrested and charged with two misdemeanor DWI offenses after allegedly rear-ending a vehicle on Clinton Street Extension.

Mayor Scott Steve has also commented on Schutt’s resignation.

“Wayne Schutt served the 1st Ward on the Common Council and contributed to discussions that shaped city decisions during his time in office. We appreciate his service to the City of Cortland and wish him well as he steps away for personal reasons.”

A decision on filling Schutt’s seat has not been made.
