ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – New York is feeling the effects of federal job losses.
The latest Department of Labor job data shows that roughly 8,300 positions were cut by DOGE (Department of Government Efficiency) last year across the Empire State, a 7% overall workforce reduction from 2024.
Though the Ithaca metro area lost the fewest total jobs at 100, it was the highest percentage by a wide margin, at 33.3%.
Senator Chuck Schumer says services at the Department of Veterans Affairs, Social Security Administration, and USDA Offices have taken a big hit.
“In every corner of New York, dedicated public servants have had their livelihoods ripped away,” said Schumer. “These aren’t just numbers; they are federal workers who help our veterans get the care they need, who make sure seniors get their Social Security, and help farmers when they are struggling. Already, we are seeing massive wait times, delays, and chaos that are making it harder for New Yorkers to get the help they need. I am all for cutting out inefficiency, but you use a scalpel, not a chainsaw like DOGE. They made devastating cuts with no plan, and already we are seeing the Trump admin scramble to rehire workers, wasting funding after upending people’s lives, hurting vital services, and damaging the economy.”
