CORTLAND, NY (607NewsNow) – The Cortland Standard is being revived.

The recently defunct newspaper has been acquired by Sample News Group, which publishes over 75 titles across four states, including eight in New York. The Cortland Standard filed for bankruptcy and closed in March after operating for over a century. At the time, ownership cited “declining readership and increased costs.”

In the wake of the sudden closure, the Cortland County Legislature designated a new official newspaper, as required by local law. The Syracuse Post-Standard was chosen. No word yet on when or if legislators will make a change.

According to the Owego Pennysaver, one of the 8 titles in New York owned by Sample News Group, the Cortland Standard will resume its previous publication schedule of Tuesdays through Saturdays, with its return edition set for May 17, 2025.
