CORTLAND, NY (607NewsNow) – A retired police dog will live out his days as a pet.
On February 3, Cortland Common Council members officially approved the transfer of ownership of K9 Officer Max to his handler and partner, Officer Alexander Perkins of the Cortland Police Department.
Max was recently diagnosed with a terminal illness that forced his early retirement. Max will spend his remaining time with Perkins, with whom he worked alongside for the past 2.5 years.
Additionally, Council members granted permission for the City of Cortland to assume any costs associated with Max’s medical treatment, including end-of-life care, which, according to the Common Council agenda, will take place in the coming weeks.
Max, who CPD says “demonstrated exceptional dedication and faithfully served the department with honor and distinction,” was honored with a walk-out ceremony on January 28.
