OWEGO, NY (607NewsNow) – A murder trial creeps closer to a verdict in Tioga County.

According to WENY-TV, the prosecution rested Tuesday in the case against Angelo Baez, though a conflicting report from the Owego Pennysaver claims prosecutors rested on Wednesday. The 48-year-old Ithaca man faces murder and kidnapping charges in the May 2023 abduction and killing of Thomas Rath, who was taken from a homeless encampment in Ithaca and whose body was found several months later on state land in Candor.

After the defense presents its case, the jury will deliberate.

The Baez case follows the conviction of another man, Joseph Howell, of Newfield, who was found guilty in October of first-degree murder, kidnapping, and three counts of witness intimidation.

Another man, Jonathon Glennon, is in custody in Tioga County awaiting trial on murder and other charges. Glennon, one of 13 people initially arrested in connection with the crime, is the final suspect facing murder charges after others accepted plea deals in exchange for testimony.
