LANSING, NY (CortacaToday) – The search is on for a suspect in the Town of Lansing after a report of shots fired.
At 12:11 a.m. on Thursday, September 19, 2024, Tompkins County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the incident at a North Lansing School Road home. A dispute among the three people living there led to a threat and a resident firing a “long gun” at another. One escaped the home and called 911, while another resident and the suspect are believed to have fled to the heavily wooded area nearby. Deputies say they heard additional gunshots.
The Ithaca Police Department and New York State Police assisted with an extensive area search, including the Tompkins-Ithaca Special Response Team and an NYSP helicopter. A SIREN alert was issued to people in the immediate area, and Lansing schools were delayed two hours while the search continued. According to Lansing Central School District Superintendent Chris Pettograsso, counselors are available to students.
The suspect has not yet been located, but the involved firearm was located, and the suspect “was known to possess no other weapons.” The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office says the person has been identified and charges are pending.
Authorities are still searching and will remain in the area throughout the day.
