ITHACA, NY (CortacaToday) — A controversial project in Ithaca could get the green light tonight.

The city’s Planning & Development Board will consider final approval for the proposed Meinig Fieldhouse at Cornell. It involves building a 90,000-square-foot recreational center and artificial turf fields.

The proposal has received support and opposition during recent public hearings. One critic called artificial turf a “harmful plastic carpet.”

Cornell coaches and athletes have spoken in favor of the project, citing physical and mental health benefits.

The board meets tonight at 6 p.m. at Ithaca City Hall.
