ELMIRA, NY (607NewsNow) – Convicted murderer Joseph Howell has received more prison time.

On April 11, the 39-year-old Newfield man was sentenced to 17 years in Chemung County for two counts of burglary, two counts of robbery, and a single count of kidnapping, according to WENY-TV. Officials say Howell received 17 years for each count, but they’ll be served concurrently.

In February 2023, Howell and two others broke into a home on Hulburt Hollow Road in Spencer Van Etten, abducted the homeowner at gunpoint, and stole from him.

Earlier this year, Howell was sentenced to a minimum of 31 years on first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping, and three counts of witness intimidation in the May 2023 killing of Ithaca man Thomas Rath.

Howell’s 17-year term will be served consecutively, meaning that sentence will begin upon completion of his time served for Rath’s murder.
