NEWFIELD, NY (607NewsNow) — First responders are crediting a smartphone app for the safe recovery of someone on Connecticut Hill.

The Newfield Fire Company says responders used the location app what3words to quickly locate someone suffering a medical issue around 4 p.m. Friday on the trail. “Dispatchers with the Tompkins County Dept. of Emergency Response were able to utilize RapidSOS and provide incident command with 3 unique words that represent a precise latitude and longitude. Responders on scene used the what3words app and were led directly to the patient. This very important tool saved responders a significant amount of time and were able to reach and extract the patient to an awaiting ambulance when minutes mattered,” according to a Facebook post.

The Newfield Fire Company returned to service about an hour later on Friday afternoon.
