ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – Over 5 million above-ground pools have been recalled.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, some Bestway, Intex, and Polygroup pools with compression straps allow children to access the water, even if the ladder is removed. The compression straps create a foothold for the children.

The recall applies to pools that are 48 inches or higher. They have been sold in stores and online at national retailers since 2002 for between $400 and $1,000. Retailers include Walmart, Target, Sears, Lowe’s, Kmart, Home Depot, Big Lots, BJs, Amazon, and Wayfair.

According to the CPSC, nine children between the ages of 22 months and 3 years old have drowned, and three other incidents in which children gained access to the pool were reported in 2011 and 2012.

Consumers are urged to contact Bestway, Intex, and Polygroup immediately to receive a free repair kit. The brand names and model numbers are printed on the pool liner outside of the pool.
