ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) — A storied hockey team is putting its trust in a Cornell player.

On June 28, the Montreal Canadiens drafted incoming freshman goalie Alexis Cournoyer. The Quebec native was taken in the 5th round of the NHL Draft.

“When I saw my name appear, I couldn’t believe it,” Cournoyer said. “I dropped my cell phone, it fell on the floor. I couldn’t believe it.”

Cournoyer grew up cheering for the Canadiens. The team has won 24 Stanley Cup titles and is among the NHL’s founding franchises.

Class of 1969 Cornell alum Ken Dryden also played goalie for the Canadiens. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1983.
