CORTLAND, NY (CortacaToday) – A man is facing more charges in connection to the death of a Cortland woman.

Authorities arrested Joseph R. Miller, 37, in Syracuse on Friday. Miller is charged with first- and second-degree manslaughter, assault, criminal obstruction of breathing, and obstruction of governmental administration.

City of Cortland Police Department (CPD) patrols responded to 183 Main Street on December 22, 2023, for a reported domestic incident. Miller, 37, allegedly attacked a 61-year-old woman, who sustained broken ribs and cuts. In December, Miller was charged with felony assault and misdemeanors of criminal obstruction of breathing and obstruction of governmental administration. The woman died on January 6, 2024, and CPD says her injuries played a key role in the cause of her death.

After the woman’s death, the Cortland County grand jury added the manslaughter charges to Miller’s indictment.

Miller was arraigned and sent to Cortland County Jail. He will appear in court at a later date.
